Chapter Thirteen

I avoid Tricus as best as I can, which is far more difficult than it should have been. It becomes even more difficult when he comes around and acts as if nothing happened last night. It makes it seem as if I had conjured up the entire thing.

At breakfast, I excused myself, saying I wanted to go for a walk, leaving him and Amalia at the table on their own.

At dinner, however, I am far too drained to do anything but eat. Tricus is sitting next to me, chatting animatedly with Amalia, who seems ecstatic that she has someone that talks nearly as much as she does. She hangs off every word he says with rapt fascination.

“So,” Amalia gushes, ignoring her food once again. “Tell me all about your first time here. I’ve heard the stories, but I want to know what was going through your head.”

Tricus is clearly soaking up every bit of attention she gives him, playing along. I eat my food in silence and pretend that I’m not just as interested to know.

“You’ve heard the stories?” Tricus asks, rather than indulging her. “From who?”

Amalia shakes her head determinedly, even though the tip of her nose pinkens. “That doesn’t matter, does it? Just tell me.”

“All right, all right, if you insist.” He straightens in his seat and clears his throat. His plate is empty before him since he’d already inhaled his food. “It was a dark and lonely night,” he begins, and I crack a smile. I wipe it off my face before anyone can notice. “Torrential rain poured from the heavens and there was nothing but emptiness as I was brought into Thron.”

“So dramatic,” I mumble under my breath.

Tricus pauses, but I don’t look up to see if he’s looking at me. That is, after all, the first time I’ve acknowledged his presence all day. A part of me is certain that he’ll point it out, but he only continues.

“Vanios had just begun his job as warden and so I assume he felt he had something to prove. As a military man, his manner of verifying himself is clearly different from others. Or, perhaps he had always been such a sick bastard. Either way, I was brought into the central courtyard and whipped.”

Amalia gasps loudly, her hands flying to her mouth. I look up as well, not expecting that.

If Tricus noticed that he caught my attention, he doesn’t make a show of it. His attention is on Amalia, who is hanging off his every word as if she truly hasn’t heard this story before.

“I mean, I’m sure it also had something to do with a few smart words here and there, but he definitely hated me from the very beginning. And I never learned to hold my tongue after that first time, and so the weeks following my arrival were filled with torture and solitary. Really builds character, if you didn’t already know.”

“What did you do?” Amalia questions, her brown eyes wide.

“To be brought to Thron?” Tricus asks and she nods.
